Day 58 (February 28): McLauchlans MadBch Clean Up

Day 58 (Feb 28): 2.56 lbs.

Our biggest haul in February.

Monthly total: 19.9 lbs (Combined with January 194.01 - that makes 213.92 lbs total since we started this journey- including the Fri/Sat/Sun beach clean ups we organized with awesome volunteers thru the Biden Inaugural Committee)

The trash cans were overflowing and the public beach area a bit crowded for us - so we snuck off at the Snack Shack parking lot, as per usual. I noticed the 6’ social distancing signs are no longer posted. Stay safe my friends

Madeira Beach named in the Top 10 Beaches in the US by Trip Advisor

St Pete Catalyst Article

I have really enjoyed getting out on the beach (nearly) every day as a part of our New Year's Resolution -- beach walk and clean up daily.

How exciting to read in St Pete Catalyst article about the Trip Advisor rankings that were just announced.

We love Pinellas County beaches, several of which were represented in the top 25 - but of course we are partial to Madeira Beach!

 Check out this article:

St. Pete Beach has been named the No. 1 beach in America by Tripadvisor in its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards. Madeira Beach came in at No. 9, with Clearwater Beach ranked 18th.

In 2020, St. Pete Beach was No. 2 on the Tripadvisor list, with Clearwater in the 5th spot. Madeira Beach has never made the list before.

“We take Tripadvisor’s awards very seriously in St. Pete/Clearwater,” Steve Hayes, president and CEO of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, said in a prepared statement. “We have been home to the number one beach for four of the past six years, but after a devastating 2020 for travel, we’re especially honored to receive the Travelers’ Choice Award this year

“Our communities, including St. Pete Beach and Madeira Beach, have done an amazing job building these great destinations and keeping their beaches pristine for travelers from near and far.”

Clearwater Beach topped the list in 2019, 2018 and 2016. St. Pete Beach last took top honors in 2012.

According to Tripadvisor, “The Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Beaches Awards reflect the opinions of real travelers worldwide, based on a combination of the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings, and the volume of saves from Tripadvisor travelers over the past year.”’

The St. Pete/Clearwater beaches were the only Florida destinations in this year’s Top Ten.

After sunset and nearly dark by the time we could escape for our beach walk. Found a glass Atlanta Falcons shot glass. Other than that, all other trash collected on Gulf Blvd or parking lot

Day 48 (February 19): McLauchlans MadBch Clean Up

Day 48 (Feb 19): 1.17 lbs. May have been a bit too excited to find this piece of purple plastic. (I have a vision of a rainbow mosaic I want to make using beach plastics in time for Pride).

Most of this trash was found in and around the parking lot by the Snack Shack. Note that there is this receptacle for cigarette butts. Yet those butts are the most common thing I find on the beach.
